Submission for FastCoDesign/Porsche 911 Next Design Challenge

Stealing design elements from any of the Porsche 911 line is a pleasure. There are so many beautiful versions of this prestigious automobile. But my favorite is the 1980s 930 Porsche 911 Turbo wide-body. The “whale tail”! The car I grew up riding to school in.

Using design elements from this car I created a LED Porsche Desk Lamp, made with brushed metal and overmolded rubber. I tried to capture the basic lines of the beefy rear wheel-well and black stone guard detail from the rocker panel and wheel-well for the base of the lamp, along with the sloped hood and rubber bumpers. The lower pivoting arm of the lamp is my whale tail and the upper arm is a reflection of the Porsche roofline and the windshield rake. Plus I added a little 911 wheel detail to the pivoting elbow between the arms.

While creating this design I thought about the speed and quality of Porsche, taking into consideration the timelessness of Porsche design. I tried to capture that feeling in the overall design presence of this desk lamp. I wanted to make it feel like it would rocket off your desk, but last forever as a testament to craftsmanship and good design.

Submission for DWR/Dwell Live/Work Contest

Create a beautiful but functional exercise chair for home or office use

While working on several new furniture concepts it was brought to my attention that the current design for exercise office chairs was very unappealing. Most look like they were thrown together with an ugly frame and a basic exercise ball.

I began researching what was on the market trying to find one applying version of these core strengthening office or home chairs. I did not.
Then I began sketching trying to rethink the best way to approach this. The first attempt was splitting the ball in 2 and using 1 half for the seating and 1 half back portion of the chair. This still had a very unappealing look and didn’t target the core enough. The next design was simply adding a back to the current exercise ball. But it was the 3rd version that I struck on a simple elegant way to solve the problem. Just add a rounded base to stool. This will make the user engage there core while working while (hopefully) maintaining good posture due to the lack of the back support.

I set out to design a chair or sitting product that engaged the core while still being a beautiful piece of home or office furniture

NUTSHELL? A glass designed to distill the essence of whiskey without sacrificing temperature or flavor. A glass designed to be partially filled with water, then frozen, then topped with whiskey and then....savored. Due to surface tension with the ice, a critical delay in chilling the whiskey is achieved so that it is not rapidly diluted and more in-depth flavor notes can be enjoyed longer.

BRIEF? To enhance the overall enjoyment of a fine whiskey at the optimum temperature....”iced” but not diluted. In short, to avoid watery whiskey! How to combine the pleasurable jolt of tossing whiskey “neat” with the more subtle experience of sipping whiskey as it continues to chill in one sittingn -- “on the rocks”. Finding a gradually delayed whiskey-to-water ratio was the problem to be solved.

INTENT? As any whiskey drinker knows, the initial sip is all-important for its fullest spectrum of flavor. Over time, that sensory experience is diluted both literally and imaginatively. I wanted to see if a glass could be created that is “transitional”, that progresses from “neat” to “on the rocks”. After discussing this dilemma with bartenders and liquor trades people as well as fellow whiskey lovers, I decided to tackle the problem and design a workable solution.

PROCESS? I, like many others, had tried what are called “whiskey stones”....cubes of limestone that are meant to be chilled and then plunked down into a glass as ice cube substitutes. But I felt these to be clunky, possibly non-hygienic,, visually unappealing and often lending a subtle change in taste to the whiskey. So I decided to find a better way, unsure at the outset if it would even work.
I began by simply adding water to a glass and freezing it, making sure not to break the glass. With some trial-and-error and eventual success came the question: just how much liquid worked best to achieve a good “transition”. I needed to fashion a perfectly shaped glass with the optimal space to create what I now call the “ice puck”. I used rapid prototyping at this stage but something was still missing: a caddy to hold the glass – or two glasses -- in a stable position while in the freezer. After considering several stylistic variations on a general theme (from ultra modern to more traditional), I landed on an elegant two-glass, side-by-side profile. For added value and functionality, I then incorporated bamboo coasters which provided both more stability and tabletop appeal. Choosing wood without hydroscopic properties was also a critical design element in order to avoid undue expansion and contraction during temperature shifts. After one more RP model, I am now ready for to seek out production capital and sources.

VALUE? No other product is on the market to capture this experience of drinking fine whiskey in a uniquely time-lapse experience. It definitely falls into the “gladdening” category as it is totally SENSUAL (including the visual element as the “ ice puck” continues to morph into water and the color of the whiskey continues to change in slow motion) and delightfully EXPERIENTIAL. From a purely economic standpoint, why invest in a high-end whiskey only to have it become a pale, watery shadow of itself within seconds of adding even a single ice cube?

DIY? Through rapid prototyping, I have now achieved what I think is the perfect scale and shape for my product. Finding sources for the necessary glass casting, plastic and rubber molding and woodshopping of the bamboo are the next steps in the manufacturing process. But of course, the concept must first be “monetized” and I have every intention of raising the necessary capital to bring this product to the marketplace.

Neat to Rock Bourbon Glass Project progress

The Neat to Rocks concept Glass that I came up with a couple of weeks ago has been moving long well. I took the next steps to refine the concept.

I tested the theory in some glasses I had at home to make sure the glass would not crack and that the ice would not float right away. The ice does not expand enough to crack the and the surface tension on the ice keeps the ice from floating when Bourbon is added. Then I tested different amount of water to get the perfect amount that does not stay neat too long before rising too the top to become rocks.

Then I started printing models of glasses to make sure my scale and shape was good. The first model was super sized but I caught it before the whole printed and then I printed 4 more before getting to the final shape. The final shape is designed with a opening at the bottom for the perfect amount of water.

I then designed the caddy to hold the glasses so they would not fall over in the freezer. The first design came out looking like soap dish and I wanted to maintain a elegant appearance, so in version 2 I decided I would incorporate coasters into the design as well. The the Caddy is molded plastic with a rubber ring around the handle hole. The coasters are Bamboo due to the fact that Bamboo have very little hygroscopic properties so it will not expand or shrink much from the moisture in the freezer. The coasters fit into the caddy and the glasses fit into the indent in the coasters.

Shape Rollerz Version 2 #PTRdesign Toyz

So after several comments I went to a uniform eye design, the square and triangle eyes were criticized and a little freaky. Also the hand hole on the triangle roller dropped past the wheels which would create a pinching hazard. So these are the updated design.

v4-9 Bentwood Modern Drink Cart

This was a design that I developed when I was designing a product a day for a few months. I had really wanted to get it into Solidworks and refine it and get a presentation page made. I finally had the time.

The concept was to create a rolling bar drink cart with a modern design and bentwood. The Ice Bucket and Chilling Buckets can be removed for cleaning.

Neat to Rocks Bourbon Glass

The flavor of bourbon changes with the addition of water. Some experts say that even if you intend to drink bourbon neat you should a few drips of water. Some say it must be served on ice. This glass allows the whole experince to happen.

This glass is designed to have a small amount of water added to the bottom of the glass. Then to be placed in the freezer until the water freezes in the small area at the bottom. Remove the glass from the freezer and add bourbon. The bourbon will start out neat and as the solid ice begins to melt the flavor of the bourbon will change. I have tested this it works very well.



I am now working on caddy design for 2 and 4 glasses so storing them in the freezer is easier.

This is a first draft of some children's toys I have been thinking about for awhile. I am still tweaking the design for aesthetic reasons and safety reasons. I am also not sure about the material yet, I have considered both CNC painted wood toys with plastic wheels and rubber Tires. I am also considering molded plastic with flocking for the bodies and plastic wheel with rubber tires.

On the Fence watering system

Since I have taken up gardening this year I have struggled with what every gardener struggles with watering. Which lead to this design a system of gravity feed planters that hang on fences.
