Pop Culture Sketching

I have been sketching lots of cool figures, animals and fun character themes for dog toys recently. I decided I wanted to transition that into some pop culture drawings. I have always been a huge comic book, video game and sci-fi fan. Much of this inspiration is why I went into a creative field. I took some of the drawing styles I have been using for toy sketches and I have translated them into my own versions of famous pop culture icons. I will post some that work in several posts.

#PTRdesigns, 53Paper & Tumblr

I downloaded the 53paper app for my iPad and I have to say it is amazing. I have never found a drawing app that captures line quality quite like it. Here is the website for it: http://www.fiftythree.com/paper
I highly recommend if you like to sketch or water color. The drawing above is of my dog I did while we were lying in bed one morning in about 20mins. It was the first time I used it.

The one downfall I have found with the 53Paper app is that it only exports to Tumblr and Facebook. I would prefer Blogger and Twitter. The Tumblr for #PTRdesigns will primarily just be digital sketches exported straight from my iPad to Tumblr as I work on them. See link below. I hope to start adding one sketch a day. I was thinking a sketch every morning right when I wake up and I am still sort of in the dream realm. I will update shortly on that idea.

instructables submissions from #PTRdesigns

instructable's the really cool DIY website is having a competition named "make it real" where you can win a 3D printer. My good friend has submitted lots of work to this site. I decided I should submit some of my own designs because, hey why not.

The first one I submitted was the "Its Money Clip" design: http://www.instructables.com/id/Plastic-Money-Clip/

The second was my "lil dudes for kids" design (pictured above): http://www.instructables.com/id/PTRdesigns-lildudes-for-kids/

Logo Design for Conor Daly

Conor Daly the young American racecar driver who is currently campaigning in the GP3 race series (en route to F1) tweeted his followers asking if someone could mock up a quick design for a logo. Well I have only designed 2 logos in my life but I figured I could make it quick and maybe he would use it. I mean why not. I don't believe in working for free, but on some Sunday afternoons with nothing else to do I just believe in working on something. I did a quick sketch sheet with thumbnails send it to him got his feedback and then a final version. He may use it he may not but it was fun to take a shot at logo design.

Vote for my Idea for Quirky

Remember Design-A-Day? By this time last year it was in full effect. So what happened to all those projects? Well as you my diligent readers know, some have been submitted to design competitions and others to Design awards. But what about the rest? With a little tightening up of the original sketches Quirky might be the best place for them.

Here is a link to the Quirky post for the first submit ed, please vote for it: http://www.quirky.com/ideations/208497?sc=true

Security Dog Leash #PTRdesign

After reading this post on FastCo.Exist no keeping your dog safe while shopping: http://www.fastcoexist.com/1679385/hundehi-keep-your-dog-safe-while-shopping I had to sketch up my own concept and show them.

Then our correspondence via Twitter:

@PTRagonetti Nice concept, Peter. Looks like a good alternative for dog-owners who don't feel comfortable leaving their dog in a crate.

-Peter ‏ @PTRagonetti
@FastCoExist Thanks It is also good for a place like NYC where space is at a premium. It was a quick 30min sketch-up after seeing your post.

-Co.Exist ‏ @FastCoExist
@PTRagonetti Impressive! Glad we could help with the inspiration :)

Fun day of sketching on Friday!

Update 05-01-12 this has been submitted to Quirky as well, please vote for it: http://www.quirky.com/ideations/209606
